In the midst of San Diego Comic-Con hysteria last week, Dynamite Entertainment announced that they have just signed a licensing deal to add Will Eisner’s iconic series The Spirit to their publishing roster. The Spirit (a murdered cop named Denny Colt turned masked vigilante) is Eisner’s most legendary character, first appearing as part of a newspaper supplement in 1940. The Spirit isn’t the first golden era property accrued by Dynamite who currently publish similarly classic titles featuring legendary pulp characters such as The Shadow, Green Hornet, and Flash Gordon.

To any concerned fans of the series, CEO Nick Barrucci had this to say in a press release from Dynamite last week:

“Bringing The Spirit to Dynamite is a dream come true. Actually, that’s not a strong enough sentiment. It’s a lifelong dream come true. The Spirit is one of comicdom’s greatest characters and has stood the test of time for nearly 75 years. Will is one of the greats and his influence as a storyteller is incredible…This is a huge responsibility that we’ve undertaken as there have been some great creators involved in The Spirit throughout the seven decades of his career…I believe that with our proved track record for high-quality pulp comics by incredible talents (like Matt Wagner, Garth Ennis and Kevin Smith), the addition of The Spirit to our line of classic adventure titles is a major win for longtime fans of Will Eisner’s original crime fighter. I cannot emphasize enough how important publishing The Spirit is to us.”

No word yet on when Dynamite’s version of The Spirit will be released.
